Toyota Camry which was globally launched in the year 1983 had increased the sales and status of Toyota motors over years. Camry which means ‘Crown’ in the Japanese language proved to be a real crown in the mark of Toyota motors even in India too. With the best in class space, comfort, features, technologies, and at last the engine and powertrain option which are one of the major highlights of the vehicle. But before continuing, welcome to this next blog of the Review Series.
On the Point
Currently, Toyota Camry is powered by a 4 cylinder Gasoline-Hybrid petrol engine, 2487cc in capacity, and is capable of producing 178PS of power all alone as well as torque of 221 Nm.
As the vehicle’s highlight defines the engine is also aided by a Self-Charging Hybrid system that features a Permanent magnet synchronous motor which basically acts as a generator. The motor produces a max output of 120PS with a maximum torque of 202Nm. The motor is used to charge a Nickel-metal hydride battery pack of the hybrid system which is having a voltage of 245V. The total power output from the engine as well as from the hybrid system happens to be around 178PS.
The engine is well mated with a CVT (Continuous Variable Transmission) along with sequential shift paddles. Moreover, the driving modes are also included in the vehicle as Eco, Normal, and Power. All this bundled powertrain configuration helps the vehicle to achieve a claimed mileage of 19.16kmpl.
For more specs, refer to the Quick specs as under:
Starting off with the front look, this 8th generation of Camry features a massive bumper grille that terminates onto the fog lamps which are all LED units. The headlamps are also all LED units including the projector setup which features a leveler function as well.
On the sides of the vehicle, the first thing to notice is that the window borders are all finished up in chrome including the door handle. The alloy wheels more or less give a classy feeling and kinda add to the luxury design language.
The rear profile features all-LED Tail lamps (Brake lights). However, the indicators, reverse parking lights, and rear fog lamps are all halogen bulbs. All over the rear design seems perfect for this class adding a more classic look to this premium sedan.
On to the interiors, the cabin is spacious like what you would expect from a premium sedan. The cabin also includes Beige Leather Upholstery along with metallic accents and Onyx Garnish. The dashboard is also curved towards the driver’s side making it more convenient especially for the driver to access each and every control on the dashboard. The dashboard also contains a touchscreen infotainment system which is also mated with premium JBL 9 speakers audio system for an immersive sound experience.
Under the infotainment system, the dashboard holds the AC controls which feature a 3 zone climate control system. Along with this, both the front seats get the ventilation function as well as 10-way electric adjustment along with Lumbar support. The steering wheel is again adjustable along with memory function. The wheel also holds controls for the audio system and also for the cruise control system. The ORVMs are all electronically adjustable with again featuring memory functions.
The instrument cluster features a mini digital display along with twin analog meters for the speedometer and the tachometer. The digital mini display features all information about the vehicle including the charging and hybrid specs. Camry also gets a Heads up display making it more convenient for the driver to see basic information, again a very practical feature. The central console includes various standard charging sockets along with premium storage spaces for all your stuff. There is also a massive space under the armrest along with twin cup holders with silver surrounds on the central console.
Camry also features a panoramic sunroof which Toyota calls the ‘Moon Roof’. However, it doesn’t retract the sunblind with it on calling the sunroof back. The IRVM gets the auto-dimming function which is an of course thing, especially at this price point.
On to the rear compartment, Camry features dual AC vents along with two standard charging sockets. The rear armrest also features a party trick that uses a touchscreen display to control mostly all the features included in the rear compartments such as the to recline the seats as they feature an electronic adjust, settings for AC vents, etc. Along with this just above that display, the armrest also contains space for twin cup holders.
The rear seats feature access to the boot as well along with three adjustable headrests adding more comfort to the rear seats. Moreover, the boot is large enough with a storing capacity of about 524L making it quite spacious for long journeys.
Well, Camry is one of the most luxurious sedans on offer from Toyota motors and also in this segment but at the same time it has got some limitations as well which are as under:
- Infotainment system: Even if the infotainment features 9 speakers audio system from JBL but it misses connectivities i.e. the Apple Car Play and Android Auto which is very disappointing at this price point.
- Rear Compartment: The rear compartment as told previously features 3 adjustable headrests including the middle one but conversely the floor is not flat and includes a hump which makes the rear passengers compromise their comfort levels.
- Others: Some other limitations are that the indicators at the rear along with the reverse parking lights and fog lamps are not an LED unit which is definitely expectable at this price point. Also, the sunroof doesn’t bring the sunblind back as mentioned previously which is again disappointing.
Well, the Camry Hybrid is definitely the best option as far as the segment is considered. It has a really good engine along with a CVT gearbox which makes it easier to shift gears along with the pedals. Not only that in terms of technology and interiors no comparison can be made. The ARAI mileage is somewhere around 19kmpl which is definitely best as compared to its rivals.
