Review Series#24; Tata Punch; Best in segment??

A month earlier there was a wave on the Indian automotive blogging sites about the leaked features of Tata Punch and I think seeing this Tata now has officially unveiled its Punch. But jokes aside the car literally bought the most powerful engine, specs and what not in the segment.

On the Point

Tata Punch features a 1.2L Revotron Petrol Engine which features 3 cylinders with 1199cc of displacement with a maximum power of 63kW@6000rpm and a maximum torque of 113Nm@3300+/-rpm. Moreover, it will come in both 5 speed Automatic as well as in Automatic transmission. The Tata Punch will feature only two drive modes as currently namely, Eco and City.

For more specs refer the Quick spec sheet below!

With Exteriors

The new entry level hatchback from Tata features Projector headlamps and LED DRL’s on the front. However, the fog lamps and the indicators will feature same halogen lights. The headlamps in the Punch are automatic along with the wipers and the fog lamps features cornering function.

On the rear too, Tata Punch features LED tail lamps along with halogen indicators and reverse parking lights. On the sides he main presence of Punch will be from its tyres which is R16 Diamond cut alloy wheels and it also features roof rails which we don’t if they are functional or not. Moreover, like the Tata Altroz, Punch will also have those 90 degrees wide doors opening.

With Interiors

In the interiors the dashboard will be enhanced by some colour accents all around the AC vents which will differ according to the exterior colouring of the vehicle in our opinion. It is also equipped with floating 7-inch infotainment displays which will ofcourse feature android auto and Apple car play connectivities and also features a rear parking camera as well.

Also, the steering wheel contains the mounted controls for the infotainment system and for the cruise control too. The vehicle is also equipped with Engine Start/Stop button and features idle stop feature too which Tata calls as ISS. On to the instrument cluster this Tata has really worked on it by providing a dedicated panel to view necessary information about the car and also the tachometer as well.

In the rear compartment Punch will feature flat floor for the middle passenger as well as claimed by Tata. Moreover, the best thing about the rear is that although it gets only two headrests but they feature height adjust. Also, there is a dedicated central armrest for the rear passengers.

While Tata punch is the most reliable package available in the market, but it has got its limitations too:

  • No Auto dimming: The IRVM does not feature any auto dimming at all which is kinda disappointing specially to miss this feature.
  • Engine Performance: As the name suggests ‘Punch’ the car should be like a punch in terms of acceleration and torque. But it doesn’t get it though, the engine performs well in city driving but on highway it kinda feels laggy as such. Moreover, it gets louder and louder in the rev range.

Well, in my opinion it will probably compete with the Renault Kiger, Nissan Magnite and the Kia Sonet. However, this time Tata has gone with fortified cabin structure to ensure body safety of the vehicle. So, there are some chances that Tata Punch will feature more safety than its rivals.
